Can Higher Prices Stimulate Product Use? Evidence from a Field Experiment in Zambia
نویسندگان
چکیده
The controversy over whether and how much to charge for health products in the developing world rests, in part, on whether higher prices can increase use. We test this hypothesis in a field experiment in Zambia using door-to-door marketing of a home water purification solution. Our methodology separates the screening effect of prices (charging more changes the mix of buyers) from the psychological effect of prices (charging more stimulates greater use for a given buyer). We find that higher prices screen out those who use the product less. The amount paid does not have a psychological effect on use, but there is some evidence that the act of paying increases use. We use our data to estimate an economic model of product use, simulate counterfactuals, and develop tentative implications for pricing policy. JEL classification: C93, D12, L11, L31

We will consider household behavior in some number of periods indexed by t. In each period t, each household i must decide whether to purchase Clorin and, if so, whether to use it in their drinking water. In period t, each household i can decide to purchase Clorin for an exogenous, possibly household-specific offer price pit ∈ (0, R] , where R > 0 is the retail price of Clorin. If the household...
متن کاملInternational Capital Movements and Relative Wages: Evidence from U.S. Manufacturing Industries
In this paper, we use a multi-sector specific factors model with international capital mobility to examine the effects of globalization on the skill premium in U.S. manufacturing industries. This model allows us to identify two channels through which globalization affects relative wages: effects of international capital flows transmitted through changes in interest rates, and effects of international...
متن کاملThe Need for Global Application of the Accountability for Reasonableness Approach to Support Sustainable Outcomes; Comment on “Expanded HTA: Enhancing Fairness and Legitimacy”
The accountability for reasonableness (AFR) concept has been developed and discussed for over two decades. Its interpretation has been studied in several ways partly guided by the specific settings and the researchers involved. This has again influenced the development of the concept, but not led to universal application. The potential use in health technology assessments (HTAs) has recently be...
متن کاملFree Distribution or Cost-sharing? Evidence from a Randomized Malaria Prevention Experiment∗ Jessica Cohen and Pascaline Dupas
It is often argued that cost-sharing—charging a subsidized, positive price— for a health product is necessary to avoid wasting resources on those who will not use or do not need the product. We explore this argument through a field experiment in Kenya, in which we randomized the price at which prenatal clinics could sell long-lasting antimalarial insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) to pregnant ...
